Bunting and Butterfly Card

Creating homemade cards is one of my FAVORITE things to do! Not only does it calm my busy mind and provide a creative outlet, but it gives me a chance to do something so special for the people I love. There’s nothing like opening your mail to find a handmade card!

My Aunt has been battling Crohn’s disease for as long as I can remember and in the past years has been in and out of the hospital with excruciating pain. Just a few weeks ago she was finally able to have surgery to help relieve her of this terrible disease, and I wanted to send her a card to let her know I’m thinking about her!

I made this “Bunting and Butterfly” card for my sweet Aunt, and I’m so excited to send it to her!

My inspiration for the card started with scrapbook paper I found at Hobby Lobby that had different color buntings running across the page. I glued a blue bunting across the top of the card and used adhesive foam squares to add a pink bunting over the blue. The foam squares elevate the paper and add interest and dimension to the card.
I stamped a butterfly onto a small piece of white card stock and rubbed a black ink pad across the edges to give it an antiqued look. I again used adhesive foam squares to make the butterfly stand out on the card.

I also added strips of coordinating scrapbook papers to the edges of the card for more color and pattern.

I thought some white lace ribbon I had would be perfect behind the butterfly, but the stark white ribbon was too bright against the antiqued ivory card.

I glanced at the half-full cup of coffee still on my desk from that morning, and thought, “I know what coffee stains do my clothes, I bet it will do the same thing to my lace ribbon!” (Those are the strange thoughts that go on in a crafty mind!)

I dunked a small length of ribbon into the coffee and swirled it around for a minute or so. Then I pulled the ribbon out and laid it on a paper towel to catch the drips. Since I am too impatient to let it air dry, I used my hair dryer to make a quick job of it. Here’s what the lace ribbon looked like before and after a swim in my coffee:

Much more of the look I was going for! I used good old Elmer’s glue to attach the ribbon to the card.

For the inside of my card, I used small letter stamps that I absolutely adore to stamp a “get well soon” message.

I was so happy to have a chance to do some fun crafting and create this sweet card for my Aunt. I hope she likes it!

I love you Aunt Carla! Sending lots of love your way during your recovery!
