Let me show you around his new moody modern bedroom!

PAINT DETAILS:

As you saw in the makeover plans blog post I shared, the first thing I did was divide the walls into two sections with Du Jour by Valspar on top and Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore on bottom. I wanted to give Alec the dark black walls he wanted, without making the entire room feel like a cave, and this was the perfect solution. 

BED DETAILS:

I found a black upholstered low platform bed for a little over $200, and so far I’ve been happy with the quality. The tufted headboard is beautiful, and I love the clean, simple, modern lines. It was simple to put together and comes in 6 different colors in all bed sizes (I ordered a full size). 

Because we upgraded from a twin bed, he needed a new mattress, and I found a surprisingly comfortable full mattress on Amazon for just over $200. I would have never thought to buy a mattress from Amazon, but you can’t beat the convenience or the ability to read thousands of reviews before you purchase. This particular mattress has memory foam on top that my son loves and over 4600+ five star reviews. It came rolled up in a box and was very easy to transport and open up inside his bedroom. If you’re looking for an inexpensive mattress for a kids or guest bedroom, I highly recommend checking this one out!

I found a simple white duvet to break up some of the black, which also came with two white pillow shams. I again turned to Amazon and unintentionally ended up buying several different bedding items from the same brand that have fantastic reviews and incredible prices. $21 for the duvet cover (and two shams) and $27 for the duvet insert with over 19k+ five star reviews! 

• TIP: Want to know an easy way to get wrinkles out of your bedding with zero effort? Mist your duvet cover with water and pull the duvet taut, running your hand over any deep wrinkles. When the water dries, the wrinkles will be almost invisible!

To round out the bedding, I added:

DECOR DETAILS:

I wanted to find a small area rug that would tie the colors of the room together, but also bring in some texture, pattern and warmth. This textured moroccan jute area rug fit the bill perfectly, and at $102 the price was just right. I will say that if you’re looking for a rug that’s going to feel super soft and plush under your feet, this probably isn’t it. You can feel the raised jute pattern, but since this is just sitting underneath a bed it’s fine in this space. The rug comes in sizes from 2′ x 3′ all the way up to 12′ x 15′ and in four different colors, plus options for runners, square, or round if that’s what you need!

This room is actually much smaller than it looks in photos thanks to a wide angle camera lens, and it doesn’t accommodate very many pieces of furniture. I wanted somewhere he could sit besides the bed, but without room for an actual chair, I settled on this darling upholstered cube from Target. At $90, this was one of the more expensive things I bought for the room, but I knew that I could easily repurpose it in other rooms in the future, and it was just the right size. Because he needs space between the foot of his bed and the dresser to get back to the closet, a bench at the end of the bed just wouldn’t work. The cube comes in 4 different colors/patterns, although it looks like 2 of them are currently sold out. 

All of the artwork in the room were pieces I already had, and I picked out a few that added some warmth and character, while still keeping with the moody, masculine vibe:

vintage football art – I purchased the 36″ x 24″ size and hung it in an inexpensive poster frame from Hobby Lobby. 
tree ring art print set – This actually comes as a set of 2 digital prints that you can frame and hang side-by-side. Black frame is from IKEA.

NIGHTSTAND DETAILS:

It wasn’t easy to find nightstands narrow enough to fit on either side of this bed, but I managed to score two of these modern black nightstands for $107 each. Easy to assemble, ships quickly, and also comes in white!

• TIP: If you need a very specific size piece of furniture, Wayfair has search filter options where you can input an exact dimension range. For example, if you needed a nightstand no wider than 18″ and no taller than 22″, you can set the filter options to show only nightstands that meet those requirements. Super helpful and time saving!

I wanted two small accent lamps for the nightstands and found these white wooden ones for $20 each. They’re the perfect size, and I like that the metal has a gold finish instead of the usual silver. 

Here’s one of my favorite parts of the room where I got a little creative with budget and design. The blank wall space around the bed lacked personality, but with several framed pieces of art on other walls already, I had to come up with something different. I needed to find room for a full length mirror for Alec and came up with the idea to place a very narrow mirror on each side of the bed just above the nightstands. I searched and searched for black framed narrow mirror options, but everything I found was either a) too large or b) way too expensive for this small of a project. I ended up sourcing these $6.44 mirrors from Walmart, and they were the PERFECT size for my idea. I used 3m Command strips to attach the lightweight mirrors to the wall, making sure to hang them perfectly level and symmetrical. 

WINDOW TREATMENT DETAILS:

These are the exact same bamboo Roman shades that I have hanging in my dining room and formerly in my office. You can order them in any width you need for your windows and in either 48″ or 72″ length. 

DRESSER DETAILS:

This dresser was handed down to me when I was a child by my grandmother, and I love that Alec still has it today. It was in desperate need of a makeover (you can see the before photos here), and I decided to paint it the same Black Beauty color as the walls. This piece was easy to paint and refinish, but it did give me a run for my money because I wasn’t being patient enough in letting it dry and cure completely. Lesson definitely learned, and I will be sharing more about painting furniture in a blog post soon!

I styled the dresser very simply with a desk lamp, framed photo of Alec in his baseball days, a small potted plant, and a wooden bowl. The lamp is old from World Market, but this is a similar adjustable desk lamp. The rest of the decor is either from Hobby Lobby or from my shop, Love Grows Wild Market.

BUDGET:

When I’m working with design clients, they often have a hard time gauging how much money they need to set aside for making over a room. Every home and every room is going to be different, but I wanted to give a full breakdown of everything I bought and spent on this room to give you an idea of what to expect when redecorating. Obviously a living room with a lot of large furniture purchases will require a bigger budget than a small kid’s bedroom, but this will give you a realistic idea of where to start. I hope this is helpful! For Alec’s room, the majority of the space is new, with the exception of a few repurposed pieces like the dresser, roman shades, artwork, one lamp, and some of the accessories for styling.

Okay friends, tell me what you think! I’m sure if you’re here because we have similar design styles, this black and modern bedroom probably isn’t exactly your cup of tea, and I totally get it! But for a teenage boy’s bedroom, I think it’s just perfect, and if my babe is happy then so am I.

Now that he’s almost done with his freshman year of high school, Alec really wanted a more grown up space that reflects his style, and I am so excited to be working on this with him. It’s definitely more dark, masculine and moody than the rest of the house, and it’s been such a fun opportunity for me to try something different and create a space that is perfectly him.

Lots of black.
More of a modern style.
Still very clean and simple.
And all done on a VERY affordable budget!

As many of you know, I’m a single mom of two boys who are now 15 and 11. My youngest son Wyatt’s room is upstairs across the hall from mine, and my oldest Alec’s room is on the main level. I don’t show their rooms very often on here because I like to allow them some privacy now that they’re older, and if I’m being totally honest, I learned a long time ago that one thing people are rather opinionated on is kid’s spaces. So I usually focus on creating content around projects in the main areas of our home, but this makeover in my son’s room is pretty drastic and definitely deserved to be documented!

This is where we are at currently:

Originally this room was painted Woodlawn Colonial Gray by Valspar, which is a very close match to Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray. Alec really wanted to paint his room all black, but after showing him some examples, we settled on painting the bottom portion of the wall black and the top a clean, crisp white. This would give him that bold, moody look he wanted without making the entire room feel like a dark cave. Luckily his room gets a good amount of light from two windows, so that also helps!

Almost six years ago now when I was writing my book, A Touch of Farmhouse Charm, one of the projects I created for the book was installing coat hooks to help organize the boys’ bookbags and coats in this space that used to be the playroom. The decorative trim I added around the coat hooks gave me the perfect spot to separate the wall for a two tone look.

PAINT COLORS:

DuJour by Valspar for the top portion of the wall, trim and doors – clean, crisp, pairs well with anything
Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore for the bottom portion of the wall – a warm, rich, cozy black

The one thing I do wish I did different now that the painting is finished… I wish I would have went an almost flat, matte finish for the black paint. I think it would have been a pretty contrast, and the satin sheen of the black paint really reflects all the sunlight coming in, which creates a glare and highlights the texture of the old plaster walls. But other than that, I am SO happy with how these wall colors turned out, and I can’t wait to start decorating!

FURNITURE:

This room is actually very small, even though the wide angle camera lens I had to use makes it appear larger in photos. And on top of being small, it has two different door entrances, a closet door, two windows, and a baseboard heater underneath one of the windows, which makes furniture placement very difficult. Luckily since Alec is a little older now, he doesn’t have a million toys like he did when he was little, and we keep things like Legos, books, Nerf guns, etc. upstairs in Wyatt’s bedroom since he is younger. So all he really needs in this space to be happy is a comfy bed, somewhere for his clothes and belongings, and somewhere to just relax and chill. 

The first thing I ordered for the makeover was a new bed for my now man-sized little boy. We used to just have a twin bed in here to not take up as much room, but he has well outgrown that and is much more comfortable in a full bed now! I wanted something low to the ground a) to not visually take up a ton of space in the room and b) because the best placement for the bed is in front of one of the windows. I found this platform bed with a tufted headboard and modern lines in black, and it was so simple to put together. And it was LESS THAN $200.

The bed leaves just enough space on either side to walk around, and I even fit a small nightstand on both sides. I decided to go with a black finish for those too so the entire lower portion of the room matches the black walls.

His dresser is actually another project from the book back in 2016 and was handed down to me by my grandmother when I was just a kid. I painted it for the book with a two tone look, but the finish has now seen better days. I’ll be giving that a makeover as well and plan to do a deep dive blog post on painting furniture while I’m working on this piece!

Do you remember these bamboo roman shades from my office and dining room? I took the ones in my office down when I recently gave it a makeover earlier this year (HERE), and luckily the two windows in this room are the exact same size. I love how masculine the combination of wood and black looks already in here, and I can’t wait to finish decorating!

My plan for the space includes:

• bedding – I’m thinking a simple white duvet with a black blanket and bringing in some softer colors with pillows
• lamps for the nightstands
• artwork for the walls
• full length mirror
• some kind of ottoman or bench for the end of the bed 
• different light fixture

BUDGET:

Besides how drastic this before and after is going to be, the other thing I’m really excited to show you is how much of a change you can make on a small budget. I’m focusing on shopping at stores that offer higher end looks for a fraction of the price and even utilizing Amazon for quite a few things as well. I’ll give you a full breakdown once the room is finished, but I’m excited to show you just how far a little paint and some creativity will go!

Our playroom has always been downstairs, just past the kitchen and across from my office. When the boys were little, it was easier to watch them while I was cooking dinner and so nice to have all their toys corralled in one spot. Our house really isn’t very big, and they have always shared a bedroom upstairs, which like my bedroom is a converted attic and full of short, awkward angled walls. Fitting two beds up there wasn’t always easy, and my oldest son, who will be turning 13 this year, is more than ready for some privacy from his little brother.

Another thing I’ve been thinking about lately is as the boys get older I want them to have a space where they WANT to be. A space to hang out with friends. A space to be themselves. I admit that I haven’t always been the best about letting them have friends come over for a multitude of reasons… our house isn’t big enough, they just run all over the place, I like when it’s just us, and quite frankly, sometimes my anxiety can’t handle the chaos of a bunch of boys and all their energy. I definitely have some mom guilt about feeling that way. But when I thought about WHY I have those feelings, I realized that it’s because I haven’t created that space for them. We have always tried to live with less and not spoil the boys with all the newest video games and expensive toys. Call me old fashioned, but I would much rather see them playing with a football in the backyard than glued to a screen, even though it’s getting harder and harder to maintain that stance with the way the world is today.

BUT, even in trying to live and teach the boys a simpler life, I still needed to carve out a space that allowed them to be boys and have friends over, and I have made that my mission over the last few months. I first moved my oldest son, Alec, downstairs to what used to be the playroom and kept my youngest, Wyatt, upstairs. Alec is at an age where he doesn’t necessarily play with toys anymore, so he was completely fine with moving all the toys out of his new room. Wyatt is only 9 and definitely still plays with things like Legos and Nerf guns, so his bedroom upstairs, which is the bigger of the two, became the room for toys. I thought that by moving the play area upstairs, the boys and their friends would be more likely to keep the noise and excess energy up there, and I would be much happier to let them have friends come over more often. So far that has worked BRILLIANTLY. I will go into more details about Wyatt’s room and how I created a better play space for them in Part 2 of this post, but today I have Alec’s new room to share with you!

Alec’s requests for his room were simple… something simple (a.k.a. not themed), masculine, and sports-related. We kept the walls gray (Woodlawn Colonial Gray by Valspar, which the entire house used to be painted in!) and brought in plenty of black, metal, and wood elements to make the space feel more masculine. I bought him a new bed frame that is basically a smaller version of mine and two new nightstands from IKEA, but pretty much everything else including the bedding, rug, dressers, most of the decor, and a bookshelf you don’t see in these photos we already had. Because these are kids’ spaces I went with a lot of furniture from IKEA that is inexpensive and easy to replace down the road. Even his new bed was under $100.

All of the items/sources are linked at the bottom of this post, but I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite things in his new room with you:

• When you walk into our home, the first thing you see is straight through the kitchen (where the kitchen table is) and right into Alec’s room. So you’ll basically get a view of either a messy boys’ room or a closed door, which would make the house look and feel even smaller. I decided to upgrade his door to one with glass panels because I thought it would be so pretty to see when you come into our home and also let a lot more light flow from room to room. My plan is to most likely frost the glass, which will still let some light through, but also give him privacy. I can’t tell you how much of a difference this small detail added to our home!
• I wanted to soften the space without making it feel feminine, so I decided to cozy up the windows by adding an extra layer of curtains. I hung basic white curtains both higher and wider than the window, which makes the window look larger and more substantial. Then I hung a tie-up curtain panel inside the window for another layer of softness. I ordered the tie-up curtains here and LOVE the way they drape and look so cozy. There is another window on the right wall that has a baseboard heater underneath, so even though I can’t add a floor length curtain there, these tie-up curtains worked perfect in that window too!
• I try to add as much storage to the boys’ rooms as possible, and the hooks I installed in here a few years ago have been SUCH a lifesaver for hanging up their book bags and coats after school everyday. The tutorial for how I created that is in my book!
• I needed a piece of artwork to hang over the coat hooks and found this one that my son and I are obsessed with. It’s a vintage football photo, and I was able to order it in a nice, big size to fit the space (24″ x 36″). Since I was trying to keep the cost of the bedroom makeovers to a minimum, I picked up a simple black poster frame from Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon for just $9.99, and I think it looks stunning. Alec told me over and over again how much he loved it when he got home from school the day it was delivered.
• Someday I will find the words to share the significance behind the angel wings in Alec’s room, but I will tell you that they are even more beautiful in person than they are in photos. I got them a few years ago to go with my Christmas decor, and they eventually ended up in this room. When we started designing their new bedrooms, and I asked them if he wanted them gone, thinking they were too feminine for him. But he said no, I want them to stay. It made my heart so happy to connect something special to him with the decor in his room, and that’s really what I strive for in decorating our entire home. Connection.

To remind you of where we started in this room five years ago, here’s a photo from the archives…

I wanted the bed to be the main focal point as soon as you enter the room, with layers of soft blankets, comfy pillows, and the perfect mattress. It was an easy way to start designing the room and add a nightstand, a dresser, and other elements around it. The first thing we needed to update in here was my son’s mattress that belonged to his great GREAT grandmother many, many years ago. It was horribly uncomfortable and definitely due for a replacement. I couldn’t be happier with the Stearns & Foster mattress we went with, and as soon as it arrived here at the farmhouse, I was impressed by the high quality materials and attention to detail that these mattresses are crafted with. The first night my son slept in his new bed, I don’t think he got up until almost 11:00 the next day! We’ve gotten into a routine on most nights now where we all lay in his big, comfy bed and read books together before bedtime. It’s something we have done on and off in the past, but since this little bedroom makeover, it’s brought back our bedtime story ritual!

Once we had the foundation of the bed upgraded, it was time to update their bedding too. I personally love having lots of layers on my bed, even in the summer time. Some nights you might only want a soft sheet covering you, but other nights it might get chilly enough to open the windows or the air conditioning might have you reaching for an extra blanket in the middle of the night. So I layered navy and white striped sheets (which I’m obsessed with and may pick up a set for my bed too!) with a basic white quilt, topped with a plush gray and white striped comforter and an olive green throw blanket folded at the end of the bed. It seems like a lot of layers, but I find that it makes the bed look and feel extra cozy and inviting, almost like a fancy hotel bed.

And one trick I’ve learned over the years for decorating bedrooms is not to buy an entire matched set of bedding. Mix and match sheets and pillowcases and comforters and blankets that are all slightly different, but stay in the same general color palette. White is always my first choice, and I blended in warm grays, soft navy, and muted green to round out this boy-themed room. Stripes are also a reoccurring theme in the bedding and also on an accent wall I created with paint. You can find that paint tutorial in my book, A Touch of Farmhouse Charm.

I like having the boys’ beds on opposite sides of the room so they are less tempted to goof around after I tuck them into bed for the night. It also gives them enough space for a nice changing area where their dressers are and some shelving with storage underneath for stuffed animals and a few toys that migrate upstairs from their playroom.

I love that I was able to use so many pieces of decor that I made myself in this room… the 5 miles arrow sign, license plate collection, framed silhouette art on the nightstand, and open shelving were all tutorials from my book!

I feel like an attic bedroom can be a major design challenge and total pain in the neck, but it also has a way of feeling extra cozy and inviting because of the sloped walls. I had such a hard time designing my master bedroom too in the beginning, but ended up embracing the uniqueness and turned it into my own little private retreat. A lot of charm and character can come from these types of challenges!

I think both boys are pretty pleased with how their room turned out, and my little man is obsessed with his new bed. They can’t wait to have friends spend the night in here, and when my sister and her family come to visit us next month, I know exactly where they’ll be staying! It feels so good to have another space in our little farmhouse finished, or at least finished for the time being.

The boys are getting older (whether I like it or not), and their bedroom needed to grow with them too a little bit. When we first moved here, the unused attic space was converted into two bedrooms, mine and the boys’. All they basically had to start with was a bunk bed that we couldn’t bunk because of the short, angled attic ceiling and two small dressers. I dug these old photos out of the archives to take you on a trip down memory lane…

Slowly but surely we started bringing in some different furniture and giving their room a little more style. I painted a fun accent wall on the far wall with the window (you can find that tutorial in my book) and replaced their bulky bunk beds with smaller simple bed frames to make the room feel more open. Even though it was a big improvement, their room still never felt finished to me. I wasn’t crazy about the layout, and poor Wyatt, my youngest son, was sleeping on an uncomfortable hand-me-down mattress from his great GREAT grandmother. Yep, that’s two greats. That thing was pretty old! These photos were taken for the book last year and show the progress we had made up until now…

There were a lot of elements I loved about their room (like the gingham accent wall and color palette), but that crusty, old mattress had to go and I wanted to get them new bedding that was nice and comfy to crawl into after their long days of school and baseball games. We also use this space as a guest bedroom when people come to visit, so I definitely wanted to make it feel cozy and inviting for company staying with us too. When I started to think about updating the design and layout, I wanted the bed to be the main focus as soon as you enter the room. A nice, big, cozy bed with layers of soft blankets, comfy pillows, and the perfect new mattress.

The first thing I did was haul Wyatt’s old mattress, which I found had springs poking out of the bottom of it, out to the garage. Yikes, it was time to let that bad boy go! I decided to go with a Stearns & Foster mattress because of the quality and craftsmanship I’ve always heard they put into their mattresses. I was doing some research online, and as soon as I mentioned the Stearns & Foster name, my mom and aunt chimed in that they are a well-known brand and their mattresses are built to last for years and years. You can tell how well this mattress was made because it was a beast to get it up our steep, narrow stairway, but after a minute of laying on that pillowy softness, it was totally worth it. I love the “handcrafted in Indiana” tag that came with the maker’s name on it. These mattresses are definitely handcrafted with a lot of attention to detail. So, funny story… as the delivery guy is getting the new Stearns & Foster mattress off the truck, I look over to see Wyatt, who is seven, welling up with tears. “What is wrong??”, I ask. Between sniffles, he tells me that sleeping on his great, great grandmother’s mattress was like sleeping on a piece of history, and he doesn’t want to let that piece of history go. Oh boy…

I guess I can’t fault the kid for knowing the value of history and how much I love keeping timeless treasures around the house, but I’m pretty sure this is one antique we can afford to let go of, son! Bless his sweet, little heart.

But let me tell you, once we got his new mattress upstairs and he saw how huge and plush and comfy it was, he changed his tune pretty quickly and said he felt like the king of the house with his new big boy bed. I believe there was also quite a bit of bragging going on between little brother and big brother over the new mattress, so I have a feeling there will be another Stearns & Foster purchase happening sometime in the near future.

Next week I’ll be sharing all the rest of the changes we made in their bedroom and a full reveal with lots of photos! I can’t wait to show you the bedding and the new layout and… it’s all just so good!
